Typically, this is referred to as the safe work load (SWL) capacity and is broken down into load capacity per level and load capacity per bay, which is the vertical arrangement of levels.

The load capacity per level is primarily determined by the length of the beam, along with its depth and height, which are collectively known as the ‘beam profile’. Additionally the load capacity for each level may also be restricted by other elements, such as the overall bay load capacity.

The bay load capacity is influenced by various factors, including the thickness of the upright posts, the height of the rack, the bracing pattern, the type of footplate, as well as the vertical spacing of the beam levels, the number of beam levels, the type of beam and its connection to the upright post. 

When quoting a new pallet racking system, a set of comprehensive engineering calculations are performed using the guidelines from AS4084.1:2023, which are the Australian standard for pallet racking, in conjunction with AS1170.1 and AS1170.4, the wind and seismic standard for Australia. 

Because these intricate engineering calculations depend on the installation site, it is almost impossible to provide a universal load capacity online. What is suitable in one area of Australia might not be appropriate in another. We advise caution when dealing with companies that offer online load capacities, as the same configuration can vary significantly, ranging between 6-tonne and 9-tonne per bay load capacity depending on the location.

Yes, pallet racking can be installed outdoors. It should consist of parts that are either hot-dipped galvanised  (HDG) or manufactured from pre-galvanised coil, both of which are specially designed to withstand corrosion and the effects of harsh weather over time.

All racking quoted by Global Industrial for outdoor installation is tested for wind and seismic conditions, depending on the specific configuration and the location of the rack installation

When it comes to installing outdoors, many forget or overlook the ground surface. It’s important to remember that the racking must be installed on a concrete surface. Installation on alternate substrates such as bitumen and gravel are not suitable. Also consider the slope and if additional shims are required.

Yes, pallet racking is very versatile and can be used in many settings, including cool rooms, freezers.

The powder coated APEX Racking has been designed and tested to withstand temperatures above +4°C and within the freezing range of -24°C to -16°C.

Should you wish to install APEX Racking in a chilled environment in the range of -16°C to +4°C or any other humid or outdoor environment, it is recommended that you have the additional corrosion protection of hot-dipped galvanised or pre-galvanised coil racking. Temperatures below -24°C must be discussed with a Global Industrial representative.

There must be a minimum horizontal clearance of;

• 75mm between the unit load (i.e pallet) and the upright frames
• 100mm between adjacent unit loads on the same beam pair.

The vertical clearances must be maintained between the top of the unit load and the beam level above;

• (i) where the equipment operator is at ground level and the top;
  • Beam levels is positioned below 6m in height = 100mm clearance
  • Beam level is equal to or above 6m high = 125mm clearance
• (ii) where the equipment operator is elevated to the storage level = 100mm clearance.

Yes, when the end frame is adjacent to a trafficable aisle, such as pedestrian pathways, forklifts or any other vehicles, the end frame must extend a minimum of 50% above the height of the top pallet.

The Australian Standard AS4084.2:2023 provides guidance on how pallet racking should be inspected.

Pallet Racking is required to be formally inspected by a competent individual at least once every 12 months. A competent person is defined as someone with a background in racking design, engineering, installation, or a similar field where they have gained expertise in steel storage racking systems.

Beyond this, the manufacturer APEX Racking advises conducting regular informal inspections internally.
In the event of damage, regardless of how minor it may be, it must be reported and documented without delay to allow for an immediate assessment of its impact on safety.
