There’s nothing worse than trying to shift heavy gear that won’t budge. That’s where castor wheels come in. They’re unsung accessory heroes, turning static loads into easily movable gear, saving your back and a whole lot of time. In a warehouse, workshop or work site, having the right set of wheels under your equipment makes a massive difference to how smoothly your day runs.
Picking the right castor wheel isn’t just about slapping any old wheel on and hoping for the best. You need to match the wheel design to the job. When you choose properly – considering the load, the floor surface and the type of movement you need – you’ll see the payoff. Easier movement, better handling, safer operations and a lot less wear and tear on both your gear and yourself. In this blog, we’re talking about our heavy-duty castor wheel range, available in a variety of options to suit different jobs.
Key Design Factors That Influence Performance
Choosing the right castor wheel comes down to a few critical design elements. Get these right, and you’re setting yourself up for smoother operations and longer-lasting equipment.
Wheel Diameter
Bigger wheels roll easier. Our 100kg-rated castor wheels come with a 100mm wheel, while the heavy-duty 300kg wheels bump up to 125mm. The extra size helps you roll over cracks, expansion joints and debris with less effort. For heavier loads or rougher surfaces, stepping up to a larger wheel size can make a big difference in handling and safety.
Wheel Material
Our industrial castor wheels are made with polyurethane treads – a top choice for workshops and warehouses. Polyurethane strikes the perfect balance between durability and floor protection. It’s tough enough to take heavy loads but soft enough not to chew up your polished concrete or epoxy-coated floors. Plus, poly wheels are quieter than hard nylon or steel wheels, cutting down noise in busy environments.
Bearings
Bearings can be the difference between an easy glide and a wrestling match. The best castor wheels are fitted with quality bearings that keep loads rolling smoothly and reduce the effort needed to get things moving. Over a full shift, this makes a massive difference to worker fatigue, helping keep your team productive and injury-free.

Swivel vs Fixed Mount Types
Swivel castor wheels allow full 360-degree movement, making it easier to tackle corners and squeeze through tight spaces. Fixed castor wheels, on the other hand, only roll in a straight line, providing better directional stability.
- Swivel models (like MH0050, MH0051 or MH0054) are great for benches and trolleys you need to steer.
- Fixed models (like MH0052 and MH0056) are ideal for straight runs across the floor.
Our swivel models feature locking mechanisms, letting you secure the wheel direction or brake the load when needed – handy when you’re working on sloped surfaces or dealing with heavy loads.

Dynamic vs Static Load Handling
When you’re choosing castor wheels, you’ll hear two important terms thrown around: dynamic load rating and static load rating. Here’s what they mean:
Dynamic Load
The dynamic load is the max weight a castor wheel can safely carry while moving. As soon as you push, pull or roll the load, the forces involved change. Wheels deal with extra pressure from acceleration, floor irregularities and impact forces. That’s why dynamic load ratings are usually lower than static ones – and why they’re so critical if your gear needs to move regularly.
Static Load
The static load rating is how much weight a wheel can support while stationary. Since there’s no motion involved, there’s less stress on the wheel structure, meaning a higher weight limit. This rating matters when you’re parking something heavy for long periods, like static shelving or parked workbenches.
It’s important to choose your wheels based on dynamic load if you expect regular movement. For occasional repositioning or mostly stationary equipment, you can look at the static load. And whichever way you lean, always leave a margin of safety – wheels under too much stress will fail fast, and the damage can get ugly.
Our heavy-duty castor wheel range covers both 100kg and 300kg load ratings, making it easy to find a model that matches your working conditions.
Mobility Considerations in Industrial Environments
Not all floors are created equal. Even polished concrete can have expansion joints, cracks or bits of debris. That’s why the choice of castor wheel matters so much out on the floor.
Smooth vs Rough Floors
On polished concrete, epoxy-coated or tiled floors, our polyurethane castor wheels perform brilliantly. They roll with minimal resistance, keep noise levels down and protect your flooring from scuffing or chipping. If your floors are older, uneven or covered in debris, a larger-diameter, polyurethane castor wheel can still handle the bumps without jamming or damaging the load. You’ll want to clear obstacles where you can, but good wheels will help you power through when conditions aren’t perfect.
Safety
Picking the wrong wheel can lead to serious safety issues – tipping loads, runaway trolleys or strained backs from pushing too hard. Investing in the right wheels keeps your workplace safer for everyone.

Common Use Cases and Applications
Our industrial castor wheels are versatile, and you’ll find them in action across a huge range of setups:
Workbenches and Tool Stations
Mobility turns any workbench into a multi-purpose station. Wheel it into place for a job, then roll it out of the way when you’re done. Perfect for workshops that need flexibility.
Trolleys and Mobile Racks
Whether you’re shifting heavy tools, stock, or raw materials, strong castor wheels take the load off your back and onto the floor.
Site Boxes and Equipment Storage
Heavy-duty site boxes (like this Steel Job Site Toolbox) fitted with our castor kits become mobile vaults – easy to move, secure when parked.
We also make it easy with complete add-on kits that come with everything you need – castors, footplates and hardware – to bolt onto your longspan shelving, pallet racking bays or workbenches without any dramas.
Important note: We don’t recommend fitting castor wheels to shelving or benches over 2400mm high or onto four-tier units. Stability gets compromised at that height, and it’s just not worth the risk. For anything tall or top-heavy, keep it bolted firmly to the ground.
A Small Upgrade with Big Impact
When you choose the right castor wheels for your setup, you’re investing in better safety, more productivity and longer gear life. Smooth-rolling equipment reduces fatigue, cuts down on job times and protects your floors from damage.
